The Sleep Around Strategy: Using DVC at the 7 Month Window

The Sleep Around Strategy: Using DVC at the 7 Month Window

What the "Sleep Around" Strategy Actually Means

If you've spent more than ten minutes in a DVC Facebook group, you've heard the term. The sleep around strategy is simple in concept: you buy points at one resort, then use those points to book stays at other resorts once the 7 month booking window opens. You own Bay Lake Tower but you're sleeping at the Polynesian. You own Saratoga Springs but you're waking up to the BoardWalk view. The name is a little cheeky, but the idea is legitimate and plenty of members do it successfully every year.

The mechanics work like this. DVC members can book their home resort starting 11 months before check-in. At 7 months out, booking opens to all members regardless of where they own. So if you own at Saratoga Springs and want to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge, you wait until exactly 7 months before your trip and try to grab what's available. Sometimes you get exactly what you want. Sometimes you don't.

Why People Buy With This Strategy in Mind

Cost is usually the main reason. Saratoga Springs is consistently one of the most affordable DVC resorts on the resale market. You can often find contracts there for significantly less per point than you'd pay for, say, Grand Floridian or Polynesian. If the sleep around strategy works reliably, a buyer might reason that they can get cheaper points and still stay wherever they want most of the time.

There's also the flexibility argument. Some buyers genuinely don't have a single favorite resort. They want to try different places every trip, and owning at a cheaper, lower-demand resort lets them keep their home base flexible while chasing availability at 7 months.

It's a reasonable plan. It's just not a guaranteed one.

Where It Works Well

Certain resort categories are much more forgiving at 7 months than others. Studios at the most popular resorts, especially Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Animal Kingdom Lodge Value studios, tend to disappear fast. But other room categories at those same resorts often sit available well into the 7 month window.

Here's a rough breakdown of how availability tends to shake out:

Room Category 7 Month Availability Notes
Studios at high-demand resorts Tough Poly, GFV, AKL Value book up fast at 11 months
1 and 2 bedroom villas Moderate More points required, so fewer members compete
Studios at mid-tier resorts Better BoardWalk, Beach Club often have gaps
Off-peak dates, any resort Good January, September, early December open up nicely
Holiday and peak weeks Very tough Thanksgiving and Christmas are essentially gone at 11 months

If you're a flexible traveler who can go in January or September, the sleep around strategy can feel almost magical. Availability at 7 months during those windows is genuinely solid at most resorts. The strategy gets much harder the more your travel dates are locked in around school schedules or holidays.

Where It Breaks Down

Studios are the biggest pressure point. DVC point charts are designed so that studios cost fewer points per night than larger units. That makes them attractive to more members, so competition at 11 months is fierce for the most desirable ones. By the time 7 months rolls around, a lot of that studio inventory is already claimed.

The Polynesian is the clearest example right now. Poly studios (the Deluxe Studios in the longhouses) are genuinely hard to get even at 11 months if you own there. Trying to snag one at 7 months without home resort priority is a long shot on any date that's remotely popular.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Kilimanjaro Club studios are similar. Grand Floridian studios book up early. These are the rooms people most want, and the owners who paid premium prices for those resorts are booking them first.

There's also a behavioral shift happening in the DVC community worth knowing about. More members are aware of the sleep around strategy now, which means more competition at the 7 month mark across the board. It was easier ten years ago. It's still workable today, but you should go in with realistic expectations.

The Resale Restriction Wrinkle

If you bought resale points after January 2019, there's one hard limit you need to know. Those points cannot be used at Disney's newest resorts: Riviera Resort, Disneyland Hotel DVC, and the Cabins at Fort Wilderness. That restriction applies at both the 11 month and 7 month windows. It doesn't matter how available those resorts look on the booking calendar. Resale points from after 2019 simply aren't eligible.

If staying at Riviera is a goal, you'd need to either buy direct from Disney or find a resale contract where the points were purchased before 2019. That's a meaningful caveat for anyone building a sleep around plan around newer resorts.

Tips for Making the Strategy Actually Work

A few habits make a real difference if you're going to rely on 7 month bookings.

  • Set a calendar reminder for exactly 7 months out. The booking window opens at 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Being there when it opens versus checking in the afternoon can be the difference between getting what you want and finding it gone.
  • Have a backup resort in mind. If your first choice isn't available, know where you'll pivot. Members who go in with one target and one backup almost always end up with a good stay. Members who go in with only one option sometimes end up scrambling.
  • Consider booking a longer stay and adjusting later. Some members book a longer trip than they need at 7 months to hold the dates, then trim nights as the trip approaches if their preferred room type opens up through cancellations. It takes some management, but it works.
  • Watch the cancellation pool. Rooms do come back. Members cancel, life changes, and inventory reappears. Checking back regularly in the weeks and months before your trip has saved plenty of vacations.
  • Travel in the right season. This one matters more than any booking tactic. Off-peak travel and the sleep around strategy are a natural pair. Peak travel and the sleep around strategy are often a frustrating combination.

Choosing the Right Home Resort for This Approach

If you're buying resale specifically to use the sleep around strategy, the home resort choice still matters more than people think. You want a resort that gives you a solid fallback if the 7 month bookings don't work out the way you hoped.

Saratoga Springs is the classic choice because it's large (lots of availability at 11 months for your own home resort), affordable on the resale market, and close to Disney Springs. Old Key West has a similar profile with a laid-back vibe a lot of members genuinely love once they give it a chance. Both resorts tend to have better availability at 7 months too, since their owners are often the ones sleeping around elsewhere.

Buying at a resort you'd actually be happy staying at is the safety net that makes the whole strategy lower-stress. If 7 months comes and your target is gone, you still have a good trip waiting for you at home.

One Honest Caveat

The sleep around strategy is real and it works. But it's not a loophole or a hack. DVC was designed with home resort priority intentionally. The members who pay more for Grand Floridian or Polynesian points are paying for the right to book those rooms first. At 7 months, you're getting whatever they left behind, and sometimes that's a lot, and sometimes it's not much.

Going in with that understanding makes the whole thing more enjoyable. Treat 7 month availability as a bonus rather than a guarantee, own somewhere you'd be glad to stay, and you'll probably have a great experience with it.
